Holywell Walk
: "St Beuno's Circular Walk" - Incorporating "St Winefride's Woodland Walk".

Mission

We want to create a very special walking route for Holywell which would as far as possible offer "Access for All". With the help of statutory authorities and funding bodies we want to ensure that the finished route is as beautiful and as interesting as possible so that it could become a major tourist attraction in it's own right.

At present visitors tend to visit either St Winefride's Well, or the Greenfield Valley Heritage Park, or (very few) Holywell Town Centre. By linking these three main features in a pleasant and interesting way, we can encourage visitors - and potential visitors - to see the area as an attractive whole, worth further exploration!

The length of the route would be approx. two-and-a-half to three miles in total, but sections could be done on thier own. We foresee that the first section - from Holywell Town centre to St Winefride's Well and adjacent new Craft Centre with cafe - (approx. 3/4 mile) - would pass within 200yds or so of the  - presently overgrown - St Beuno's Well. For that reason, and also because St Beuno established the first known community in Holywell and travelled everywhere on foot, we propose that the whole route will be called "St Beuno's Circular Walk". We are working to restore this ancient well and to create a "side" path to it.

Additional Benfits of this scheme:

  • We believe it would be the only Access for All walk in Britain to include a famous healing shrine and ancient place of pilgrimage on its route. This would offer an excellent marketing opportunity as far as tourism is concerned and would help Holywell live up to it's "Lourdes of Wales" label.
  • With the publication of the new "Walks around Holywell and Halkyn Moutain" booklet, and the nearing completion of the Wat's Dyke project, Holywell is "growing" as a walking centre. This project would help build on these initiatives.
  • As the final section passes through the town centre it would help draw more visitors to the town centre.
  • The route would be well served by places of refreshment as on the first section it would pass next to the new cafe which is planned as part of the transformation of the old Woolen Mill shop next to the Well into the craft centre, and on the last section it would pass next to the Leisure Centre.
It should also help attract good-quality tea-rooms to Holywell High St.
  • The third, Holway, section of the route (which has superb views over the estuary) would also double as a "Safe Route to School" for children from the Holway Estate.

*Because of no long-stay parking in the Tesco's car-park at the town entrance to the Valley, the town-centre section of the walk will probably - unfortunatly -  not be the first/final section.
